Paychex has introduced Workforce Intelligence Strengthened by Expertise (WISE), a new AI-driven platform designed to help businesses automate and optimize human capital management workflows through agentic AI capabilities. The company says the platform moves beyond traditional chatbot functionality by enabling autonomous digital workers that can proactively assist with HR, payroll, workforce planning, and compliance tasks.
Announced as part of Paychex’s broader AI strategy, WISE serves as the intelligence layer across the company’s Paychex Flex, Paycor, and SurePayroll platforms. The system combines AI agents, embedded analytics, personalized assistants, and human advisory services to help organizations manage day-to-day operations more efficiently.
“AI is integral to our growth strategy, and WISE is the next frontier of AI-enabled solutions for Paychex,” said John Gibson, president and CEO of Paychex. “Unlike other SMB HCM providers, WISE goes beyond customer support chatbots and is embedded across our expert-enabled technology, anticipating issues and surfacing recommendations to users in the flow of work. Built on a foundation of decades of data, HR and compliance expertise, and trust, we developed WISE to help businesses of all sizes deploy a digital workforce that augments repetitive tasks, enabling people to focus on more strategic work.”

The platform is designed to function proactively rather than reactively, using contextual understanding and enterprise data to identify issues, recommend actions, and complete certain tasks autonomously within customer-defined parameters. Paychex said the system can support activities such as scheduling employee shifts, approving timesheets, generating HR insights, and assisting with regulatory compliance.
According to Ryan Bergstrom, Chief Product Officer at Paychex, WISE represents a shift from user-driven tools toward intelligent systems capable of acting on behalf of organizations while still maintaining human oversight.
“WISE represents a fundamental shift in how intelligence is applied in HR—from user-directed tools to an agentic platform that works proactively on behalf of customers,” Bergstrom said. “Working collaboratively alongside users for a human in the loop experience that reduces risk and effort, WISE anticipates what matters and proactively takes action autonomously within customer-defined protocols rather than requiring users to search for answers, navigate complex workflows, or react to problems after they occur.”
The platform combines four key components: AI agents that automate workflows, contextual intelligence for predictive insights, multi-channel assistants that provide guidance across communication tools, and advisory capabilities that support HR professionals in complex decision-making. Paychex said the offering is built on decades of proprietary workforce data and compliance expertise, enabling businesses to deploy AI-supported workflows while maintaining governance and operational control.
