According to Careerminds, the recent study “The Leadership Readiness Gap: Are Managers Prepared to Lead Through the Next Era of Workforce Transformation?” finds that the gap between perceived leadership capability and actual skills in modern organizations is growing. Almost all people managers (98%) and HR professionals (97%) surveyed were very confident that all managers are ready to work effectively. Though, less than half of them believed that leaders are ready truly to solve major modern challenges like AI adoption, organizational restructuring, employee wellbeing, and difficult workplace conversations. The lack of leadership skills negatively affects business performance with a high risk of turning over employees, lower engagement and slowed decisiveness. Besides, the difference in perception among hierarchy levels is quite evident as 66% of the C-suite believe they are fully prepared to lead the company through the changes whereas only 42% of senior and middle managers share this view.

As the survey, 88% of HR departments and 72% of managers say executives regularly put managers in the middle of a tug of war situation – between management expectations and the needs of employees. Emphasizing the fundamental shift in leadership responsibilities, Mark Saddic, Senior Partner at Careerminds, stated: “The role of the manager has fundamentally changed. Today’s leaders aren’t simply managing performance. They’re helping employees navigate AI, organizational transformation, shifting career paths and increasing uncertainty — all while delivering business results. Organizations cannot assume confidence equals capability. Managers need practical support, ongoing development and the tools to lead through continuous change.” Underscoring why bridging this gap is crucial for long-term organizational survival, Saddic added: “The organizations that succeed over the next decade won’t simply adopt new technologies faster. They’ll invest in preparing managers to lead people through change. Leadership readiness has become a competitive advantage.”
