Digital identity provider ID.me and financial data network Plaid have announced a strategic partnership to enable state and federal government agencies to verify both a claimant’s identity and the receiving bank account within a single, continuous enrollment flow. By combining ID.me’s digital identity wallet with Plaid’s account verification tools, the joint solution allows agencies to confirm that a financial account belongs to the verified recipient before disbursing funds, directly bridging the critical gap between identity confirmation and payout delivery. The integrated system eliminates manual verification processes and bank statement uploads, allowing eligible claimants to complete direct deposit setup in minutes while leveraging their financial institution’s real-time data to prevent payment fraud. Highlighting the critical security gap addressed by the collaboration, Blake Hall, Founder and CEO of ID.me, stated:

“Identity verification tells an agency who is asking to be paid, but it does not tell them where the money is going. That gap is where benefits go missing, and it’s costing our government and everyday Americans billions of dollars. Through our partnership with Plaid, agencies would be able to confirm the account belongs to the verified person before a dollar moves, and eligible people get paid faster.” Emphasizing the operational improvement for legitimate beneficiaries, Eric Sager of Plaid added: “For too long, getting benefits to the people who qualify for them has meant a slow, manual process that fraudsters have learned to exploit. Agencies have gotten very good at confirming who someone is. What’s been missing is the same confidence about where the money actually lands.” Ultimately, this partnership provides government agencies with an end-to-end payment integrity architecture that accelerates distribution, enhances audit compliance, and safeguards public funds against organized fraud.
