Equifax Survey Finds 75% of HR Professionals Face Misleading Candidate Data

Share

The survey findings from Equifax Workplace Solutions show that there are serious issues with HR departments as they are increasingly facing fake and overstated qualifications from applicants. In this research, it is revealed that nearly 75% of HR personnel get stuck with forged or inflated documents when hiring. This is raising the alarm in human resource teams about the dishonesty in job seekers, the misuse of fake online interviews, and inaccurate descriptions of previous jobs at current candidate pools.

The survey results indicate how new workforce trends like the adoption of remote recruitment methods and the use of AI-based job application assistants are leading to higher employee hiring and representation of candidates not being genuine.

Key Findings on Candidate Misrepresentation and Risk

Nationwide research collected perspectives from recruiters, background screening managers, and leaders in talent to estimate the operational costs of inaccurate applicant information.

Widespread Applicant Fabrication: Out of all the human resources officers who were surveyed, 75% said that they had found lies that had exaggerated, concealed, or completely made up information, not just on applicant resumes but also on employment application forms.

Increasing Verification Complexity: More than half of the hiring managers cited as the main source of operational delay verifying work history and degree of candidates.

Effect of Generative AI: Hiring pipelines were flooded with counterfeit applications through AI-powered form fillers and AI voice impersonation at remote video calls due to the rise and fall of synthetic media like deepfakes and AI-generated texts that can be mistaken for human-written content in interviews.

Increased Compliance Vulnerabilities: Hiring teams warned that unapproved candidates not only cause legal problems but also expose organizations to data breaches and operational disruptions.

Unifying Verification and Workforce Intelligence

To address the growing threat of applicant misrepresentation, enterprise HR leaders are shifting from traditional self-reported background checks toward automated, data-driven identity and employment verification solutions. Leveraging direct-source employment registries allows organizations to validate work history, job titles, and tenure in real time drastically reducing time-to-fill while safeguarding company security.
