Share

TrueBlue, a leading provider of specialized workforce solutions, released new research from its flagship staffing brand PeopleReady, offering fresh insights into what drives today’s temporary workforce across generations. Based on responses from more than 8,000 workers nationwide, findings from the 2025 Temporary Workforce Report highlight evolved workforce dynamics that reframe how employers should think about today’s workforce and shed light on what employers must do to attract and retain talent in an increasingly competitive labor market.

“Our research clearly points to three essential drivers of attracting and retaining today’s temporary workforce: a mobile-enabled platform, flexibility anchored by stability, and trusted relationships backed by strong local support,” said Taryn Owen, President and CEO of TrueBlue. “With decades of experience, an extensive national footprint and deep local market insight, TrueBlue’s unique view of evolving workforce dynamics shapes our approach and fuels our ability to connect employers and talent with unmatched precision and scale.”

Key Findings

Mobile-first Isn’t a Trend, It’s the New Standard: From quick onboarding to accepting jobs with a few taps, workers across all generations want a seamless experience they can access directly from their phones.

  • More than 80% of temporary workers, including 85% of Baby Boomers, value the ability to find a job from their mobile phone.
  • 83% of surveyed workers across all generations want a staffing company with a mobile app, like PeopleReady’s JobStack, to find work.
  • 90% of Baby Boomers value fast pay, more than any younger generation.

Stability and Flexibility Are Critical: Temp workers aren’t looking to work less; they’re looking for more flexibility without losing stability.

  • For 3 out of 4 generations, earning “primary income” not “extra cash” is the primary reason they choose temporary work.
  • 65% of Gen Z respondents prefer multiple shifts at the same jobsite, showing desire for stability alongside choice.
  • 1 in 4 workers cited flexibility in schedule, location, or job type as a leading reason for working temporary jobs.

Personal Connection Matters: Even in a mobile-first world, across all generations, employer trust and local support matter.

  • Nearly 90% of surveyed workers say trust in their employer is critical.
  • 80% value a staffing company with a local branch presence.
  • Of all generations, Gen X (89%) most values quick and effective support when job searching.

“The key to success is understanding how to attract and retain today’s multigenerational temporary workforce,” said Kristy Willis, President of PeopleReady. “Businesses can’t build reliable workforces without first understanding the people behind them. This report challenges common stereotypes about temporary work: today’s workers aren’t just seeking side income, and mobile access isn’t only a priority for younger generations. By aligning with these expectations, we help our customers improve satisfaction, performance, and long-term value from day one.”
