More than half of job seekers who are actively searching for employment are being silently rejected by prospective employers without any human communication, as revealed by a recent study conducted by Enhancv, a provider of resume and career platform solutions. This study, entitled The Black Hole of Hiring, highlights the growing issue of transparency deficit in the current recruitment processes due to the increasing trend of using artificial intelligence and automated systems among corporations.
This national survey was conducted on 1,066 U.S.-based job seekers across various levels, from entry-level positions up to executive level positions. Based on the survey results, 50.5% of the respondents have experienced silent rejection during their search in the previous year without any human communication regarding the rejection. Because of this, 63.8% of these job seekers believed that an algorithm and not a hiring manager is making the decision.
The Breakdown of Transparency in AI Screening
Although AI screeners have become increasingly used by employers, transparency from organizations in regard to their use has been low. In the study, it is noted that 68.5% of those applying indicated that the use of AI was never mentioned when they were applying. Only 9.7% were actually informed that an AI was assessing their qualifications, meaning that almost 85% of candidates do not know if anyone has ever seen their CVs.
“When half of all job seekers are rejected without human contact, and over 80% have no idea if a person or an algorithm read their resume, trust in the hiring system breaks down completely,” said Volen Vulkov, co-founder of Enhancv. “AI was meant to streamline recruitment, but without disclosure and clear communication, it has created a black hole that turns qualified candidates away.”

Candidate Counter-Tactics and Algorithmic Bias Concerns
Friction caused by automated candidate filters is actively altering applicant behavior and driving qualified talent out of hiring pipelines:
Avoidance of Unidirectional Screens: About 31.4% of job applicants admit to voluntarily dropping a job application or outright refusing to attend an interview simply because they wanted to avoid one-way video interviews, and/or automated chatbots.
Loss of Low-to-Chef-Figure Positions: Lower to mid-level jobs have the highest attrition from job seekers, 79.1% of all abandoned job applications were for such positions that paid yearly less than $100,000.
Nearly Half Are Afraid of Algorithmic Discrimination: More than half (47.7%) of jobs are of the opinion that job recruitment AI has discriminatory algorithms related to age race gender, etc. The fear of discrimination, Because of this, becomes 53.4% among neurodivergent seekers.
AI Performance Tools: 49.6% of job seekers are now using AI powered tools to enhance their CVs and interview answers to get a better performance in front of machines that do automated screening interviews.
Methodological Framework and Industry Scope
This study is based on a survey of 1,066 U.S. job seekers conducted by Enhancv in April 2026. The sample spans entry-level workers, mid-level managers, freelancers, and senior executives across multiple industries. The survey measured silent rejections, AI disclosure rates, candidate drop-off behaviors, and perceptions of bias in automated hiring.
