Specialized workforce solutions provider TrueBlue published new research from its RPO brand PeopleScout, revealing a disconnect between the accelerated adoption of artificial intelligence in recruitment and the overall candidate experience. While enterprise hiring teams continue deploying AI tools to boost operational efficiency, the study highlights ongoing friction in areas candidates value most, including communication frequency, process transparency, and respect for applicants’ time.
The comprehensive report, titled Inside the Candidate Experience: AI Is Reshaping Hiring. Communication Is Still the Missing Link., combines quantitative data from over 1,000 global job seekers across 10 international markets with PeopleScout’s proprietary Candidate Experience Index. The findings indicate that while 52% of active job seekers utilized AI tools during their job search over the past six months, foundational talent acquisition touchpoints remain consistently underserved.
“Hiring is still a human relationship, and this research is a reminder that candidates remember how they were treated far more than how fast the process moved,” said Taryn Owen, President and CEO of TrueBlue. “We’re focused on pairing AI-enabled tools with clear communication at every step of the hiring journey, because that combination not technology alone is what advances our mission to connect people and work.”

“We use AI-supported technology to help our clients hire with greater speed and consistency,” said Rick Betori, President of PeopleScout. “But this research confirms what we tell every client: technology is necessary, but it isn’t the only piece of the hiring strategy. Organizations that successfully pair these tools with transparency, communication, review and oversight, and human connection are the ones that build lasting candidate trust – and that combination is exactly what PeopleScout delivers.”
Key Research Findings: AI Adoption vs. Communication Reality
The report is highlighting a number of significant figures for job seeker behavior, candidate perceptions of automated recruitment platforms, and the direct commercial impact of a bad hiring experience.
Major use of the Candidate AI: almost a half (52%), of job seekers questioned had used an AI app at least once in the six-month time frame, with 52% predominantly using the tech to make resumes and cover letters, research employers (56%), and prep for interviews (46%).
Still, applicants get very little communication after submitting their applications 64% of them said that they didn’t get a response from more than half of the companies that they applied to and 90% said they went through ghosting completely at some stage in their search.
Very low level of candidates understanding AI: 65% indicated, the employer never told them AI was used in the selection process, and only 25% of candidates felt they are confidently that their human employer had looked at their submission.
What the candidate values the most: When evaluating hiring process factors on a scale of 5 point, candidates valued respect for their time (4.36/5), clear process transparency (4.28/5), and fair assessments (4.27/5).
Direct corporate Implication: A single bad candidate experience can translate into other bad corporate results; 37% of disgruntled candidates discourage others from applying to the company, and 36% and 34% respectively stop buying goods or doing business with the company in question.
Strategic Opportunities for Enterprise Hiring Organizations
The data clearly reveals a strategic need by companies for human resources executives and directors of talent acquisition. Rather than only using automated screening software to speed up recruitment workflows, leading employers are taking the step to mix machine efficiency with proactive communication. Enterprises can enhance their employment brand and get the most out of their investment in recruitment technology through making the process of hiring transparent, giving candidates feedback on schedule, and maintaining the human element.
