Instructure and Orijin Join Forces to Scale Secure Digital Learning in U.S. Correctional Facilities

Instructure, the company behind Canvas LMS, has teamed up with Orijin. This partnership seeks to boost secure and scalable education in U.S. correctional systems. They will introduce Canvas LMS to more than 300 facilities across 20 states. This effort will boost education and workforce development pathways. The goal is to improve job outcomes after release and reduce recidivism.

Orijin is known for offering modern education programs in the justice system. This includes juvenile facilities, jails, prisons, and parole and probation settings. They also work with community-based alternatives to incarceration. As Orijin expanded, it faced issues with outdated education technology. This technology lacked the security, flexibility, and real-time data needed in correctional environments. Orijin can boost personalized learning by partnering with Instructure. This way, they also keep the control and compliance needed in these settings.

At the heart of the partnership is Canvas LMS. It offers centralized curriculum delivery, tracks learner progress, and reports outcomes across facilities. This setup helps jurisdictions broaden their options, from high school equivalency to college education. It also creates clearer pathways that link incarceration, education, and employment.

“Correctional systems are navigating rapid change while operating in some of the most complex learning environments,” said Kevin Martin, vice president of sector strategy at Instructure. “This partnership with Orijin reflects Instructure’s mission of setting potential in motion by expanding access to education where it can have the greatest impact. Orijin understands what it takes to deliver learning inside correctional facilities and together we are helping Orijin keep pace with change and improve outcomes during incarceration and beyond.”

The impact of expanded access is already visible. Through Orijin’s platform, a formerly incarcerated individual earned industry-recognized manufacturing certifications, opening new career opportunities as he prepares for parole.

“Orijin’s mission is to prepare justice-impacted individuals for sustainable employment and education is central to making that possible,” said Harris Ferrell, CEO of Orijin. “Instructure shares our belief in the power of education to unlock opportunity, and together we are amplifying human potential by bringing high-quality education into correctional environments at scale. Canvas LMS gives us a trusted platform that can grow with our programs and support better outcomes for learners during incarceration and beyond.”

Instructure and Orijin are demonstrating how modern learning systems boost equity, accountability, and measurable results in correctional education nationwide.
