Shift Launches Wage & Hour Compliance Training for Managers

Share

SHIFT HR Compliance Training has launched a new course designed to help managers and supervisors identify wage and hour compliance concerns before routine workplace decisions develop into larger risks.

Called Understanding Wage & Hour Compliance (FLSA), the 15-minute course is the latest addition to SHIFT’s Manager in Minutes program, which provides focused training around situations managers regularly encounter. The new offering centers on the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and uses workplace scenarios to help managers understand when everyday actions could affect employee pay or create compliance concerns.

“Managers make decisions every day that can have wage and hour implications, often without realizing it,” said Katherin Nukk-Freeman, Co-Founder and President of SHIFT HR Compliance Training. “A conversation about someone’s schedule, breaks, or timecard can seem completely routine. Manager readiness starts with recognizing when one of those ordinary moments may require more attention and knowing what to do next.”

Topics in the training include work outside of regular hours (before after in-between regular shifts, on days off, remotely, and after hours) timekeeping breaks, changing job functions, changing classification of employee. Instead of training managers to make legal decisions about classifying work and calculating overtime, it explains how to identify signs of the legally sensitive issues and when to involve an HR or payroll specialist, legal counsel, or other internal expert.

“Managers don’t need to become FLSA experts,” Nukk-Freeman said. “They need enough understanding and practice to know when to pause, when to ask questions, and when to involve the right internal resources. That’s a critical part of manager readiness.”

Developed and reviewed by employment law attorneys, the course also emphasizes that state, local and organizational requirements may extend beyond federal FLSA standards.

The launch expands SHIFT’s Manager in Minutes portfolio, which already includes training covering areas such as FMLA, ADA, feedback, listening and workplace belonging. The company plans to add courses on interviewing and effective performance management, further positioning manager readiness as a practical component of workplace compliance.
