ISG Research Highlights Shift in Enterprise L&D Tech to Adapt Evolving Workforce Needs

Share

Enterprise learning software is now evolving its structural format much by changing the administrative compliance portals into agile platforms that are in particular tailored for workforce readiness and talent development. To start with the ISG Learning and Development 2026 Buyers Guild, a research by global technology research and advisory firm Information Services Group (ISG) points out that traditional Learning Management Systems (LMS) and LXP (Learning Experience Platforms) have merged into a single architecture which gives users with both the right of consumer-style freedom and control of corporate-compliance at the same time.

Modern learning platforms that have the ability to directly connect with Human Capital Management (HCM) software, company HR databases, enterprise collaboration tools as well as third-party content providers enable global organizations to drive skills-led strategies while reducing or even without the burden of administrative overload.

“As skill requirements grow more complex, enterprises want fewer systems that do more,” said Stacey Cadigan, ISG partner, Human Capital Management. “They need unified platforms that preserve governance and compliance while making training more relevant for both employees and the organization.”

The Transition to Skill Ontologies and Granular Analytics

The ISG report assesses 31 global vendors that offer learning platforms, learning content platforms, and L&D suites. A notable discovery is about companies moving away from static training catalogs to learning based on skill ontologies, dynamic models that show how enterprise concepts, skill sets, and job roles are connected to create personalized learning paths.

Per ISG, by 2029, many half the world’s enterprises will implement learning platforms that are based on ontologies. The purpose of this will be to increase employee engagement and retention rate.

Concurrently, corporate evaluation criteria are prioritizing actionable visibility into workforce readiness, compliance risks, and automated audit trails over simple course completion tracking. Advanced analytics tools and artificial intelligence now automate repetitive tasks, such as automated content tagging, while enabling targeted training distribution based on employee role, regional jurisdiction, or operational risk profile.

Prioritizing Relevance and Unified L&D Suites

There have also been similar shifts in terms of enterprise expectations from learning content platforms, where the focus has shifted from just volume of content to context and measurable business results. Firms are trying to streamline their investments into content to demonstrate ROI while leveraging complete L&D solutions that can connect employee training to role progression and coaching.

“When evaluating learning platforms, enterprises should look for products that combine traditional governance with features that meet emerging user expectations,” said Matthew Brown, director of research, Human Capital Management, at ISG.
