AI Is Reshaping Work Dynamics, Not Replacing Jobs, ActivTrak Report Finds

Artificial intelligence is reshaping the modern workplace, but not in the way many expected. According to the 2026 State of the Workplace report released by ActivTrak’s Productivity Lab, AI is accelerating the pace and complexity of work rather than reducing workloads. The study covered over 443 million hours of digital workplace activities from 1,111 organizations and 163,638 employees, providing a broadest view of the evolution of work patterns.

The study results indicate that the workday has become shorter by 2%. It has reduced from 8 hours and 53 minutes to 8 hours and 44 minutes on average. Employees are accomplishing more during this period. Productive hours per day have increased by 5%. Now, employees are productive for 6 hours and 36 minutes on average. Employees are starting their workday earlier than before. The average workday has started at 7:48 a.m. compared to 8:02 a.m. earlier.

Although productivity has increased, work intensity has increased along with it. Employees are spending 34% more on collaborative work than before. Employees are also multitasking 12% more than earlier. Employees are working on weekends. Productivity on Saturdays has increased by 46%, whereas productivity on Sundays has increased by 58%.

The rapid growth of AI tools is a significant factor in this change. The report revealed that currently, 80% of workers are using AI tools in their workplaces, marking a 52% rise in the past two years. At the same time, the total time spent on using AI platforms increased eightfold. Organizations are also increasing their number of AI tools, with a rise in the number of tools used in companies, averaging seven or more, compared to two in 2023.

It seems that, instead of replacing tasks, AI is adding more activities in workers’ digital workflows. The total time spent in workplace applications increased by 27-346% following the implementation of AI, including a 104% rise in email, a 145% rise in chat and messaging, and a 94% rise in business management tools. At the same time, workers’ focused work sessions decreased, showing a more fragmented and fast-paced workflow.

“AI adoption is accelerating faster than most organizations can measure its impact,” said Gabriela Mauch, Chief Customer Officer and Head of the ActivTrak Productivity Lab. “What our data shows is that AI isn’t reducing work, it’s increasing the speed and density of how work happens. The challenge leaders now face is closing the AI measurement gap and gaining real visibility into how AI is changing productivity, focus and workforce capacity.”

The report draws on three years of anonymized workforce intelligence data collected between 2023 and 2025 across more than 23 industries, including financial services, professional services, insurance, engineering, and cloud technology—highlighting how AI is reshaping productivity across sectors.
