O’Reilly has partnered with Microsoft to launch NLWeb, an open-source project aimed at transforming websites into AI-powered applications through natural language interfaces. This collaboration enables users and AI agents to interact with web content conversationally, without relying on centralized platforms. O’Reilly’s integration of NLWeb allows conversational search across its extensive library of 59,000 books, utilizing Schema.org metadata for accurate results without web crawling.

“We see NLWeb as a crucial component of an open ecosystem of protocols and tools that will shape the next evolution of the internet,” said Tim O’Reilly, founder and CEO of O’Reilly. “By implementing this technology early, we’re reminding our technically savvy audience that the original promise of the decentralized World Wide Web does not need to be abandoned to get the benefits of conversational AI.” Microsoft’s Ramanathan Guha, a pioneer in web standards, emphasized the significance of this initiative in restoring control to content creators and fostering an open, agentic web. NLWeb leverages existing structured data formats like Schema.org and RSS, combined with large language models, to create intuitive, natural language experiences for users. This initiative marks a significant step toward decentralizing AI interactions on the web, empowering publishers to offer personalized, conversational experiences directly on their sites.
