A new survey from Harvard Business Review Analytic Services, sponsored by TriNet, shows that small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are rapidly adopting artificial intelligence. However, they struggle to build the workforce skills for this change. The report, “The New Talent Playbook for Small and Midsize Businesses in the Age of AI,” is based on responses from 230 professionals aware of their organizations’ U.S. talent practices. It found that 76% expect their companies to boost AI usage in the next 12 months. Yet, only 19% feel their firms are well-prepared to recruit or develop AI-related skills.

The survey also reveals that 56% expect AI to require new employee training methods. Additionally, 49% foresee changes in job roles and responsibilities. Furthermore, 70% say AI adoption is increasing the demand for human skills like creativity, intuition, and judgment. “AI is fundamentally transforming the way SMBs operate,” said Catherine Wragg, Chief People Officer at TriNet. “At TriNet, our commitment to putting SMB customers at the center of everything we do drives us to understand their evolving needs.”
